Providing Access To Affordable Health Care

Bank City First Bank N.A.
Client Unity-Parkside Community Health Center
Location Washington, DC

City First Bank has used the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) Program to raise private sector capital to finance high impact community facilities projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region of the country. City First Bank provided $24 million in below-market rate capital to finance the new construction of a 42,000 square foot state-of-the-art health care facility, Unity-Parkside Community Health Center, in Washington, DC.

The new centre replaced a much smaller facility that was in very poor condition and didn’t adequately serve the needs of the community.  According to the 2000 US Census data, the Unity-Parkside Community Health Centre is located in a highly distressed census tract with a 32% poverty rate; income that is 32% of area median income; and unemployment that is 2.4 times the national rate. The clinic is operated by Unity Health Care, a Minority-controlled non-profit.

Unity-Parkside Health Centre, a Federally Qualified Health Center, provides comprehensive primary care and preventive care to persons of all ages regardless of their ability to pay or health insurance status in the areas of adult medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, infectious disease (i.e., HIV/AIDS services), social services, dental, pharmacy, lab, mental health, family planning and substance abuse counseling.

The clinic serves a client base that is on average 89% low-income, 87% Minority and 11% homeless. The new clinic now hosts 50,000 patient visits annually. The clinic’s new home is LEED Silver certified and includes a green roof on which the clinic holds health and wellness activities. Learn more.
